Change of Character

Key idea

Change of character (CHoCH) is the first structural clue that a trend may be ending — typically the first break of a swing point in the opposite direction to the prevailing trend. It's earlier and less certain than a full reversal pattern, so it should adjust your risk posture before it dictates a new directional bet.

How to apply it

• In an established uptrend, watch for the first close below the most recent higher low — that's an early CHoCH signal.
• Treat it as a reason to tighten risk or stand aside, not an automatic reversal trade.
• Look for confirmation: does the next swing also break the prior pattern (lower high, then lower low)?
• Reassess the higher-timeframe trend before assuming a full reversal is underway.

Example

After six consecutive higher lows, price finally closes below the most recent higher low. That single break doesn't prove a downtrend has started, but it's a legitimate reason to stop adding to long positions and wait for more evidence.
